BC Traffic Control FAQQ. What is a flagger or flag person? A. The proper term for a flagger or flag person is TRAFFIC CONTROL PERSON or TCP. A TCP is required under the following circumstances:
A. The course is two days. The first day is spent in a classroom learning the rules and regulations that govern traffic control. Day two starts in the classroom for more theory, then moves outside to perform the practical portion of the course and then returns to the classroom for the final written exam. Q: What is the registration procedure? A: You must register in person and pay the registration fee at the time of registration. At that time, you will be given your course manuals to take home to study and familiarize yourself with. It is suggested that there is approximately 6 hours of pre-course reading to be performed prior to the start of the course. You will need to bring the course manuals with you on the first day of the course. Q: What about class size? A: Regulations allow for only 14 students per class. Classes fill quickly and registrations are on a first come/first served basis. We suggest that you register early to ensure space is available on the dates you require. Q. What do I need to bring to class? A. When you first register for the course you are given the course manuals. Read them prior to attending the class. Bring these manuals to class with you. On day 2 there is a practical session. You MUST wear CSA Approved Class 1 steel toed work boots (you will not be able to participate in the practicum without these) and clothing suitable for the weather. Your instructor will provide you with a proper hard hat, wrist cuffs, high visibility vest and all the necessary equipment needed for the practical session. These items are to be returned to the instructor at the end of the practical session. You will also be required to bring a passport sized photo which will be used to generate your laminated wallet card ID. This ID certifies you to work in BC for three years as a TCP in the Province of British Columbia. Q. What kind of job can I get after the course? A. There are many jobs that will require the use of a person who is
properly trained as a TCP including: Flagging companies, road construction,
BC Ferries, Production Assistants for movie studios and Utility Companies
all require certified TCPs. Effective January 1, 2005 you need to be
certified through the SAFETYNETWORK in order to flag in BC. This means
even to back a truck out onto the street or an all day construction
job! |
